Protesters want Los Van Van to know Communists are not welcome in South Florida

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Cuban-Americans said Los Van Van collaborated with the Communist Party in Cuba. The dance band played on Friday at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, a venue owned by the city of Pembroke Pines.

The city also approved a protest permit at the City Center Plaza. Cuban-American protesters wanted the musicians to know they want Communists out of South Florida and the city to cancel the concert.

There was a “stand by freedom” petition and hundreds of complaints. Pembroke Pines officials said the concert organizers rented the hall and breaking the concert would expose the city to liability.

Pembroke Pines Police Department officers responded.
