COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – Coconut Creek police are warning residents to be alert after a 94-year-old resident fell victim to a “distraction scam” last Thursday.

Police said a man and a woman knocked on the older woman’s door, claiming to be landscapers hired by her homeowners association.

According to police, the woman took the victim to a back window to show her some tree limbs they wanted to cut down. The man then “excused” himself to “get some tools.”

“While the woman kept her distracted, the man emptied the victim’s jewelry box and took some other valuables,” police said.

Police did not announce any associated arrests and said the case remains under investigation.

“The bottom-line scam prevention tip is to never let anyone in your home that you don’t know,” they said.
