Crews working to repair water main break in Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Public works crews were on scene in Hollywood after a Telecom contractor accidently hit one of the city’s new water pipes on Tuesday morning.

Local 10 News spotted water gushing from a broken pipe, flooding the neighborhood on the intersection of 20th avenue and Washington Street.

Crews responded early to the incident and have since isolated the area.

Local 10 News’ Sanela Sabovic spoke with Hollywood resident Hendrikus Wienberg who said that the flooding got worse and worse.

“Water was reaching heights of 3-4 feet in the center of the intersection,” said Wienberg. “It started off slowly and it gradually got worse and worse.”

After the pipe was hit, witnesses said the street eventually caved in leaving a gaping hole and sending water everywhere.

Hollywood Spokeswoman Joann Hussey told Local 10 News because of the quick response time by utility crews, residents are not being asked to boil water.

“Because the pipe is new, and crews responded very quickly, they were able to reroute water service pretty quickly, so there is no need for a boil water,” Hussey said.

Utility crews were spotted working into the evening hours now and trying to repair that broken pipe and seal the gaping hole.

Water has been restored to impacted residents and crews told Local 10 that temporary repair will take about 3-4 hours.

Once the new pipes arrive on scene, city officials told Local 10 that work should be completed in about two days.
