Local restaurant holds benefit in memory of fallen Pembroke Pines police officer

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – The Colada Cuban Café held a special benefit Tuesday in memory of fallen Pembroke Pines Police Officer Charles “Charlie” Herring, with 100 percent of the proceeds being donated to the officer’s family.

Herring was riding his police motorcycle on 184th Avenue in February when he was hit by a falling palm frond, causing him to lose control and crash.

Herring was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

“He would come in all of the time, so he was a regular customer of ours, and when it happened, obviously we were very touched because he had just been in here maybe a day or two before he passed,” Alex Recio, of the Colada Cuban Café, said.

The café also placed a gold plaque on the table where Herring used to like to sit in his honor.
