Police said officers arrived at the scene and found a woman suffering from gunshot wounds.
She was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police confirmed that they pulled over the suspect, Dewey Freeman, after he fled the scene and he provided a full confession.
According to a complaint affidavit, Freeman and the victim got into an argument over living arrangements before he grabbed a gun.
Police said he fired at the victim several times while standing only feet away from her, striking her four times – twice in the chest, once in the right forearm and once to another part of her body that was redacted from the publicly released report.
Police said Freeman’s sister witnessed the shooting and provided a statement to detectives.
According to the affidavit, Freeman admitted to throwing the gun in a canal after the shooting. Detectives noted in the affidavit that Freeman “expressed remorse, and acknowledged the responsibilities for his actions of shooting the victim.”
Police said he also acknowledged that he was not allowed to possess a gun because he is a convicted felon.
He was arrested on charges of attempted premeditated murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
