Officials survey damage after tornado touched down in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The National Weather Service was out in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, surveying damage done by a tornado.

They have since confirmed that an EF-0 tornado touched down on Saturday.

Officials are thankful that no injuries were reported and damage appears to be minimal.

“These things can hit very quickly,” said NWS senior meteorologist Robert Garcia. “Sometimes with little to no advance notice.”

There have been several videos showing Saturday’s tornado.

In one, you can see the moment the tornado caused sparks to fly in an apparent power surge.

Garcia said the cyclone was on the ground for a mile and a half, with a maximum width of 100 yards and reaching speed of 80 miles per hour.

“The tornado came down a little north around the yacht club and made its way northeast toward A1A,” he said.

It blew through areas like Rio Vista and Las Olas Isle.

Debris could be seen scattered off Southeast 25th Avenue, as well as a fence that was blown out, downed power lines and a large uprooted tree.

Along the 1700 block of Southeast 10th Street, a power pole could be seen ripped from the ground.

Some property along the intercostal had shattered glass and outside furniture tossed around.
