MIAMI – A video surfaced showing students fighting before a teen pulled out a gun and fired at a 15-year-old boy on a Miami-Dade school campus’ parking lot on Thursday night after a basketball game between Miami Central and Miami Northwestern high schools
The shooting victim was identified as Devin Reeves, and he was at Jackson Memorial Hospital, police said. Police officers responded after a Shot Spotter alert and arrested the suspect. Activist Renita Holmes said she was heartbroken.
Authorities with Miami-Dade County Public Schools confirmed Saturday that Reeves and the alleged shooter are both students. It is not clear which school they both attend.
“A kid that walks to school can get a gun from another kid, a kid can get a gun from an elder. They’re just out here,” said Holmes, who lives in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, adding it’s just “easy” for kids “to get their hands on guns.”
Tangie Sands said she felt panic and rushed to Northwestern, at 1100 NW 71 St., to see if her son was safe. He was, but she is convinced that more needs to be done to protect students.
“You have to screen every child every single person that steps on the grounds of these schools,” Sands said. She fears that without improvements “this will continue to happen.”
