Convicted felon’s crime spree in Miami-Dade includes police pursuit, crashes in 2 stolen cars

Police officers arrest suspect with criminal convictions going back a decade for crime spree while on probation

MIAMI – A 41-year-old convicted felon on probation told detectives that he was experiencing hallucinations after he was involved in a police pursuit and two crashes in stolen cars on Monday in Miami-Dade County.

The first crash involved four vehicles in Doral. It was shortly after 1:40 p.m., near the intersection of Northwest 107 Avenue and 25 Street, according to a police arrest report.

Mike Carmona was driving a 2003 silver Honda Accord, and as he approached a red light, he rear-ended a car and caused a domino effect, according to police.

Carmona, 41, jumped out of the stolen Honda Accord, which belonged to a woman in Kissimmee and was registered in Naples, and ran towards another driver, according to police.

The driver of a 2010 silver Volkswagen Tiguan told police officers that Carmona was bleeding profusely so he opened the window, and that was when Carmona stuck his arm inside, and opened the door, records show.

There was a struggle. The driver managed to get out of the car about two blocks away, and Carmona drove away with the Volkswagen Tiguan, according to the police report.

When a police officer attempted a traffic stop, Carmona sped away along Northwest 27 Avenue until there was a multi-vehicle crash at West Trade Avenue, according to police.

Carmona jumped out of the car and ran away. There was a search and police officers arrested him at about 8:40 p.m. While in police custody, he was treated at the Jackson West Medical Center in Doral. Correctional officers booked him at about 4:40 a.m., on Tuesday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Carmona has been in and out of prison since 2006 and his convictions go back to 2003, records show. He was last released from prison on March 23, 2021, after serving time for attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Carmona’s probation was set to end in 2026, according to his profile with the Florida Department of Corrections. He also had two other warrant cases after he was accused of driving with a suspended license and of failing to have a vehicle registration.

For the crime spree on Monday, Carmona is facing charges of kidnapping, burglary with assault, carjacking, strongarm robbery, leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury, aggravated fleeing to elude a law enforcement officer, and tampering with a witness or victim.
