Video shows man ramming car into Broward gas station where woman sought refuge; cops later shot him after chase

PLANTATION, Fla. – A man was shot early Friday morning after a domestic incident sparked a police chase in Plantation and ended in a crash and confrontation in Lauderhill, authorities said.

The incident began just before 5 a.m. when officers responded to a Mobil gas station at 10261 W. Broward Boulevard for reports of a domestic disturbance, according to the Plantation police.

Investigators said a 31-year-old woman went into the gas station to try to get away from her 32-year-old boyfriend when the boyfriend rammed the door of the gas station with his vehicle.

Surveillance footage obtained by Local 10 News showed a customer standing at the door and quickly getting out of the way as the suspect drove his car into the front doors of the business.

The man was then seen backing up his car and driving into the store three more times before he got out and pushed his way inside the damaged doors of the store.

Additional surveillance video shows an officer arriving and approaching and entering the store with his gun drawn, according to police. The footage shows other officers arriving and the suspect pulling away in his car as the officers begin their pursuit.

During the pursuit, the suspect rammed a police car before crashing into a median in the 1600 block of Northwest 31st Avenue in Lauderhill, authorities said.

Following a brief foot chase, police attempted to detain the man who they said resisted arrest.

Police said as a struggle ensued, the man attempted to take the officer’s gun when the officer shot him.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, where he was listed in critical condition. His identity hasn’t been released.

The incident has left many Broward residents on edge.

“I’m traumatized to be honest,” said a Lauderhill resident. “I’ve never witnessed anything that close to where I live, especially a shooting.”

Authorities said the man could face charges that include kidnapping, false imprisonment, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, depriving an officer’s weapon and resisting arrest.

Authorities confirmed that the Plantation Police Department is leading the investigation and none of the responding officers sustained any serious injuries following the incident.
