MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 12-year-old boy has died after he was struck by a vehicle last week outside an elementary school in northwest Miami-Dade, police confirmed Tuesday.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials confirmed that they responded to the 500 block of Northeast 151st Street after receiving a call at 7:08 a.m. last Thursday.

The scene of the crash was located just outside Biscayne Gardens Elementary School.

The child, identified by Miami-Dade police as Mathayus Ruedas, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. He later died from his injuries.

According to a GoFundMe page initially set up to help Mathayus’ mother pay for his medical bills, Mathayus was walking to school with his two younger siblings when he was hit by the car.

Upon arriving at the hospital, he underwent surgery for brain hemorrhaging and part of his skull was removed, the GoFundMe page stated.

The page was updated Monday, confirming that Mathayus had died at 8:05 a.m. that morning.

“Thank you everyone for all of your prayers, words of encouragement, and donations,” the post read. “Please continue to share this campaign as his mom and siblings will need all the help we can provide.”

Miami-Dade police said the driver who struck Mathayus remained at the scene. It is unclear if he or she will face any charges.
