Here’s why officials say parking problems could be a thing of the past at MIA

Miami International Airport is set to go through a beneficial change for travelers as it broke ground Tuesday with the announcement of a historic parking facility, infrastructure and maintenance project.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava led the ceremony for the new innovative parking garage.

This state-of-the-art facility, to be called “Parking Garage 6,″ will add more than 2,200 spaces spread across seven levels, bringing the airport’s total to nearly 10,000 spaces.

The garage is expected to be completed in late 2025 and aims to be a pivotal solution to the increasing demand for parking options at MIA.

Levine Cava told Local 10 News that she is excited about the airport’s growth.

“The future is now, so this is exactly what we need to do because this airport is growing phenomenally,” she said.

Its new location, which is adjacent to MIA’s existing Flamingo garage, “promises to substantially enhance parking availability for both passengers and employees,” according to airport officials.

“Obviously, there are key times when the garages are particularly full,” said Levine Cava. “Thanksgiving is certainly the busiest, and the Christmas and New Year’s holiday, but we have so many major events with people coming from all over, we know that we will always have a need for extra parking.”

An MIA spokesperson told Local 10 News the new garage will feature “forward-thinking elements,” including 50 spaces dedicated to electric vehicle charging, energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures, and a Parksmart Silver Certification design.

“We prioritize all based on need, and right now parking is a big need for us,” said airport CEO Ralph Cutie.

The expansion project is just one of several that the county has planned from its $7 billion capital improvement fund.

MIA is currently on pace to have its third straight record-breaking year in passenger volume, according to airport officials.

“Our capital improvement program is 7 plus billion and it includes 150 projects,” said Cutie. “Some of the big ones include our south terminal expansion, which we’ll be advertising for that next month, our central terminal redevelopment.”
