Victim identified in fatal Tamarac crash

TAMARAC, Fla. – Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating after they said a man was killed when he crashed a pickup truck into a tree last Sunday in Tamarac.

According to investigators, deputies received a report of a pickup truck that crashed into a tree just before 2 p.m. near the intersection of Commercial Boulevard and Northwest 64 Avenue.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the driver of a 2001 Ford F150, who deputies identified as Gibson Metellus, 40, of Lauderdale Lakes, was traveling westbound on Commercial Boulevard when an unknown vehicle began to encroach on the lane he was in.

Detectives said Metellus abruptly swerved to the left and drove onto the center median. The vehicle continued westbound until it struck a tree.

Authorities confirmed there was no contact between the unknown vehicle and the Ford F150. Upon arrival, paramedics pronounced Metellus deceased at the scene, according to BSO.

Investigators said excessive speed is considered a contributing factor in the crash.
