Miami-Dade PD: Man shoots himself in head; bullet also strikes girlfriend in head

Police: Four children were home when mother was shot

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade police are investigating a shooting that occurred Wednesday morning.

The shooting was reported at a home in the 11200 block of Southwest 30th Street.

According to Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, who is also a spokesman for the police department, officers arrived at the home to find a man with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and his girlfriend also suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Police later confirmed that it appears that the man shot himself in the head during a discussion with his girlfriend, and the same bullet struck the woman in the head as well.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced the man dead at the scene.

First responders transported the woman to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in stable condition. Police said she was the person who called 911 at 4:17 a.m.

“Everything is indicating at this point that the same projectile that impacted his head was the one that impacted the female as well,” Zabaleta said. “It appears that this individual took his own life and, in the process, almost took his girlfriend’s life as well.”

A Local 10 News crew was at the scene as the woman’s four children were being reunited and embraced by family members.

The children -- a 12-year-old girl, 10-year-old girl, 9-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy -- are the woman’s children from two prior relationships, authorities confirmed.

Further details about the discussion between the couple that led up to the shooting were not immediately released.
