FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police officers remain actively investigating the murders of a Fort Lauderdale couple.
The person or persons responsible for the gruesome crime also took off in the couple’s vehicle.
Officers have not made any arrests and are still searching for the car.
For decades, Major Melvin and his wife Claudette called their yellow house on the corner of Southwest 30th Terrace in Fort Lauderdale home.
Neighbors like Ivan Jackson said the couple —well into their 80s — were kind and kept to themselves.
“He was a great guy. Him and his wife,” said Jackson.
It was Friday evening when someone got into their home and shot them to death.
“Both of them were shot from what I understand with a 9 millimeter,” said Tonya Mitchell, the victim’s daughter. “All they found at the house was the casings.”
Mitchell said her father was lying on the couch when it happened.
Her mentally disabled brother managed to call family members from another room, who then called police.
The killer or killers did not take any valuables from the home, only the couple’s car, a red Ford Fusion with Florida tag L-T-D Q-1-6.
The car has not been found, but family members said there is a Sunpass in the vehicle and they are hoping it may be picked up somewhere and give police a lead.
For now, the family is stumped over who could have done this and why.
“We just need some closure, we want to know why,” said Mitchell.
Police said Friday that they have no new updates on their investigation.
Anyone with information on the crime or who thinks they spotted the vehicle is urged to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
