POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A 21-year-old woman from Cape Coral was killed Monday morning after the Florida Highway Patrol said a man in an SUV collided into her on Interstate 95 in Pompano Beach, shutting down all northbound lanes for several hours.

The Toyota, which was disabled from a prior crash, was stationary in the express lanes of I-95 when the Hyundai collided with it and struck the woman who was standing nearby. The Hyundai eventually came to a stop after striking a concrete barrier wall inside the express lane, investigators said.

FHP officials said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene by Pompano Beach Fire Rescue personnel and the 31-year-old male driver of the Hyundai sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

According to authorities, FHP troopers temporarily shut down a portion of I-95 but have since reopened all lanes following cleanup operations.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing and the woman’s identity has not been released at this time.

It remains unclear if the man will be facing any charges.
