Serial traffic offender cuffed in hit-and-run that hurt girl, 8, in Hallandale Beach, cops say

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Hallandale Beach police arrested a 37-year-old man they described as a “habitual traffic offender” after they said he sent a young girl flying after he hit her Monday morning, then left the injured girl at the scene.

Berdry Lubin is facing a charge of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries following the 7:30 a.m. crash along Southwest Third Street.

A neighbor’s security camera captured the crash.

The 8-year-old girl was standing on the side of the street while a truck pulls into view and stops for traffic ahead.

She darted out from behind the truck and into the street.

Police said Lubin, driving a black Mercedes-Benz, speeds into view, headed from the opposite direction and hits the little girl as she ran into the street.

Lubin stopped and got out; the video showed him carrying the injured child at one point, police said, but when other witnesses stopped to help, Lubin is accused of leaving.

Broward resident Andre Malek, who was outside when the crash occurred, told Local 10 he provided a description of the frantic driver when speaking to police.

“He was a nervous wreck — I mean, he was like, ‘oh my God, oh my God. Can I use your phone?”' said Malek.

According to police, Lubin had no insurance and his car wasn’t registered.

They used a description of him and his vehicle to track him down and take him into custody.

In the meantime, the girl was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

“She’s in good and stable condition,” Capt. Megan Jones, a Hallandale Beach police spokesperson, said Monday. “She did suffer a broken arm and some abrasions, but is going to be OK.”

Lubin was being held in the Broward Main Jail as of Monday afternoon.
