POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A 22-year-old hit-and-run driver in a 2017 Mercedes C300 struck and killed a 20-year-old bicyclist on his way home — while fleeing from deputies — early Sunday morning in Pompano Beach, according to deputies.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Kenroy Jackson Jr., the speeding fugitive, lost control and struck the bicyclist, at about 12:30 a.m., in the area of North Andrews Avenue and Northwest 15 Avenue.
BSO deputies reported Jackson, of Hollywood, took off running. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue reported the victim of the hit-and-run crash, Eric Gray, died along North Andrews Avenue.
“He was a good-hearted person, funny, and loving life,” said Keyon Gray, his grieving brother.
Relatives said Gray was on his way home from work at a nearby fast-food restaurant. Keyon Gray asked the public to provide information about what happened before the fatal hit-and-run crash.
Deputies accused Jackson of being involved in a street takeover in the area of McNab Road and Andrews Avenue — crashing into a marked BSO K9 vehicle and speeding away before the fatal crash.
Jackson allegedly “attempted to negotiate a curve in the roadway and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle rotated clockwise and slid over the pavement towards the bicycle lane and sidewalk,” according to BSO deputies.
BSO deputies booked Jackson at the main jail in Fort Lauderdale.
Jackson was facing six charges: Aggravated fleeing with serious injury or death, criminal mischief over $1,000, participation in an unlawful race, reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, and resisting an officer-obstruct without violence.
