‘I need justice for my mom’: Daughter of Miami-Dade hit-and-run victim wants driver captured

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Sixty-seven-year-old Madette Laurent died while crossing the street in northeast Miami-Dade Sunday morning; police said the driver who hit her took off.

Now, her devastated daughter is demanding justice. She said she wants the driver who left her mother lying in the street like an animal to step up and turn him or herself in.

“I just want someone to help me to just find that person,” Naresh Laurent said. “I need justice for my mom.”

The crash happened at around 5:25 a.m. along Northeast Sixth Avenue near 149th Street.

“Just someone hit my mom like that and it hurts,” Naresh Laurent said. “I just want that person — I need justice.”

Madette Laurent had five children; most of her family lives in Haiti.

Her daughter called her an incredible mother.

“She’s a good mom, good mom,” Naresh Laurent said. “I miss my mom I want my mother back.”

Miami-Dade police continued to investigate Monday.

Police haven’t made any arrests, but witnesses say the driver may have been in a maroon-colored SUV at the time of the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
