CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A large police presence was seen at a Coral Gables apartment building Thursday morning as police investigated a murder-suicide that left two people, including the suspected gunman, dead and another person injured.
It happened at Gables Ponce Apartments, located at 320 Granello Ave., near the intersection of U.S. 1 and Le Jeune Road. Video from Sky 10 taken just after 10:15 a.m. showed multiple officers and crime scene tape outside of the building.
According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, which investigates homicides on behalf of Coral Gables police, a 20-year-old man called 911 just before 9:45 a.m. to report that he had been shot. The shooting led to a brief lockdown at nearby Coral Gables High School.
Police said the suspected shooter is a 61-year-old man who shot his 41-year-old girlfriend and her son, the 20-year-old, before turning the gun on himself.
“It is shocking,” neighbor Lili Swanson said. “It is upsetting, of course.”
The 20-year-old survivor was taken to Jackson South Medical Center, where he received lifesaving surgery, police said. Authorities said he was in “critical but stable condition” as of Thursday afternoon.
Police haven’t publicly identified the suspected gunman or his girlfriend.
“I just can’t believe it. I just hope it’s somebody I don’t know,” neighbor Lori Perez said. “Oh, it’s just terrible (for) the families.”
Police are urging people who may find themselves in violent relationships to seek help.
