DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – Huber Vasquez-Lopez appeared in Broward County bond court with cuts and bruises on Sunday, as he faced 12 charges — including six pre-trial violations on a pending case.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Vasquez-Lopez, 22, suffered the injuries, including a cut that required stitches above his right eyebrow, when a knife-wielding robber attacked him.

Vasquez-Lopez was riding a bicycle when he was robbed at about 10:25 p.m., Saturday, near Northeast Second Avenue and 49 Street, in Deerfield Beach.

“Detectives say the man refused to further cooperate with the investigation,” Claudinne Caro, a spokeswoman for BSO, wrote in a statement.

After giving detectives the impression that he had something to hide, detectives found Vasquez-Lopez had outstanding felony warrants and took him from the hospital to jail on Sunday.

The warrants were related to a DUI hit-and-run crash in Margate that injured a woman who had to be treated at the HCA Florida Northwest Hospital in January.

According to an eight-page traffic report with the Margate Police Department, Vasquez-Lopez had an alcohol level of .313 after he crashed into the back of a beige Mazda 3 at about 6:40 p.m., on Jan. 1, at West Sample Road and Banks Road.

After the crash, Margate police officers were searching for Vasquez-Lopez when Coconut Creek police officers found him in his crashed white 1999 Chevrolet Astro van, according to the report.

Vasquez-Lopez allegedly told Coconut Creek and Margate police officers that “he was traveling in his lane when the ‘pendejo’ hit him” while ‘he was trying to get home to his wife and baby,’ but there were witnesses to the contrary.

After the Jan. 1 arrest, Vasquez-Lopez faced charges for failure to remain at the scene of an accident, a third-degree felony; four first-degree DUI-related misdemeanors; a second-degree misdemeanor for driving without a license; and a traffic citation for careless driving.

Broward County court records show Circuit Judge Thomas J. Coleman, who is presiding over the DUI hit-and-run crash case, had issued warrants for his arrest on Jan. 23, March 22, and April 17 related to the pending case.

The Jan. 13 and April 17 warrants were active when BSO deputies met him on Saturday night in Deerfield Beach.

Inmate records show Vasquez-Lopez is facing charges of leaving the scene of a crash with personal injury, four counts of driving under the influence, driving without a valid driver’s license, and six pre-trial violations listed in a warrant.

Records also show Vaquez-Lopez was denied bond for all the charges and was at the North Broward Bureau on Sunday night in Pompano Beach. Vaquez-Lopez’s attacker got away.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
