DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A group of eight dogs have made the journey from the big bend to central Florida to here in South Florida, where they will hopefully be able to find their forever homes.
Their previous home was in Perry, Florida, where Hurricane Debby’s downpours and winds created operational woes for the Taylor County Animal Control.
“Hurricane Debby left them without power, some of their kennels were flooded and they reached out for help,” said Cherie Watcher with the Humane Society of Broward County.
While the power has since been restored there, a member of the Broward Humane Society made the trip to Kissimmee to pick up the pups.
HSBC, along with three other Florida shelters, have stepped up to assist the Taylor County shelter.
“We’re only able to help because of the support we get from the South Florida community,” said Watcher. “If people didn’t come and adopt, we’d always have the same animals. So, it’s a constant flow of animals come in and people coming to adopt.”
The goal now is to give the doggies some much deserved rest time and have them checked out by the staff.
That includes Spike, who will need some medical care.
“Hopefully spike just needs a few good meals and he’ll fatten up in no time,” said Watcher.
But soon enough, Hannah, Star, Hazel and the others will be ready to find loving homes in South Florida.
The goal is to have the dogs up for adoption as soon as possible, which may be by this weekend.
