According to an arrest report, Hialeah Gardens police were called to a school Friday by a school resource officer who reported that a girl had arrived at the school with visible marks on her face.
The age of the child and the name of the school were redacted from the publicly released report.
Police said officers spoke with a school counselor who had spoken to the girl. She said the girl told her that her mother, Sandra Flores, had hit her the previous night because she “ate all of her food.”
According to the report, the girl claimed that Flores grabbed her with both hands by the shirt and began shaking her from side to side, digging her knuckles into her daughter’s chest.
Police said Flores then grabbed the victim by the neck, pushed her to the floor and punched her in the face and head area.
According to the report, the victim provided the same story when questioned by two law enforcement officials.
Police said she also told them that her mother had “violently hit her in the past.”
Flores was arrested at her home that same day and denied the allegations against her, authorities said.
According to the report, despite the visible injuries on the victim’s body, Flores claimed her daughter was lying.
Police said Flores’ own father spoke to a detective at the police station that same day and informed the detective that his daughter has always treated the victim differently than her siblings, and that he had told Flores in the past that he would like to take full custody of the victim, but she refused.
According to the report, after speaking with the detective, the grandfather went back to the victim’s home to wait for the victim to come home from school so he could look after her.
The Florida Department of Children and Families was notified about the allegations, however it’s unclear whether the grandfather will be granted custody of the girl.
Flores faces charges of child abuse without great bodily harm and battery.
As of Monday afternoon, Flores was no longer appearing in the online jail database.
