It happened around 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 when the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Lazaro Yasmani Hernandez, arrived at the victim’s home, according to an arrest report from the Sweetwater Police Department obtained by Local 10 News on Monday.
Authorities said the victim invited Hernandez to resolve a work-related issue regarding “nonpayment.”
The victim told police the argument escalated into a fight, which led Hernandez to pull out a large knife and attempt to stab him in the face and neck in the kitchen-living room area of the home, the report stated.
Police said the victim defended himself by blocking Hernandez’s knife attack with his right hand, which resulted in deep cuts to his ring and pinky finger.
While the victim tried to call 911, authorities said Hernandez grabbed his phone and smashed it. They said Hernandez then fled the scene on foot.
Sweetwater police said while reviewing surveillance video on Feb. 28, they spotted Hernandez outside a home on Southwest 12th Terrace.
After notifying Hernandez’s probation officer, police said he was later taken into custody during a probation check.
Jail records show he is facing one count each of attempted felony murder with a firearm or deadly weapon, armed robbery with a firearm, tampering with a witness and criminal mischief. They also show he was on probation for a robbery/ carjacking charge.
As of Friday, Hernandez was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was listed as “to be set.”
