MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A grass fire broke out in a populated part of southwest Miami-Dade Wednesday afternoon.
Crews responded to the area of Southwest 127th Avenue and 128th Street, just east of Miami Executive Airport, at around 2:30 p.m.
“Really big clouds of smoke -- just like really dark smoke and you could see the flames,” Sam Santiago, who lives nearby, said.
Sky 10 was above the flames that fed off a dry, wooded area.
The smoky conditions led to the closure of Southwest 122nd Avenue and 130th Street. Traffic was detoured.
“The smoke was still piling on … Luckily, we have a nice, thick trees to block the smoke in the fire," Sebastian Espinosa, who lives nearby, said. “A bunch of firetrucks lined up here and everybody here was trying to get home. It was all blocked off. It was a little hectic.”
The fire was reportedly affecting about 20 acres and was 85% contained as of 7 p.m.
Officials haven’t yet said whether they’ve identified a suspected cause.
They advise anyone with respiratory conditions to remain indoors, keeping windows and doors shut.
No structures have been affected by the fire.
