“When he cocked it and the police fired, and he kept firing, it was like World War III,” Erica Nelson, who lives nearby said.

Nelson’s home surveillance video captured the man’s encounter with the sergeant around 7:45 p.m.

In the video, a shouting match can be heard between the man and sergeant, who was responding to a call about a person waving a gun and acting recklessly in the 21600 block of Southwest 122nd Avenue in the county’s Goulds neighborhood.

According to authorities, the man was inside a minivan when an MDSO sergeant arrived and ordered him to show his hands, authorities said.

Deputies said the man did not listen to the orders which led to an exchange of gunfire in which the man was shot.

“I was scared for my life,” Nelson said. “I ran … When he cocked it and pointed it, the first thing in my mind was ‘run.’”

More surveillance video from Davis Grocery, across the street, offers a closer look at what happened minutes before shots rang out into the air.

The video shows the sergeant responding to the scene and then running for cover.

One minute later, deputies arrived for backup.

“At the time of the shooting, it was only the sergeant and the subject that were on scene,” Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said.

The sheriff also responded to the scene.

“There was an exchange of multiple gunfire by both the subject toward the sergeant, as well as my sergeant returning fire, she said.

Authorities have not identified the man, only saying he was a Latin male in his 40s with an extensive criminal history.

The sergeant, who is a 19-year veteran of the department, was not injured, nor were any civilians, deputies said.

“We’re very grateful to the community for making that very difficult 911 call,” Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said. “As difficult as this scene is, it could have been a lot worse. It was clear that this individual was intent on harming someone. In fact, shooting at our sergeant.”

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
