MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A suspect who was fatally shot Tuesday night by a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office sergeant has been identified by authorities as 44-year-old Jose Pineda Jr.
According to MDSO, someone called 911 at about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday and reported that a Hispanic male, later identified as Pineda, was pointing a gun at people in the area of Southwest 216th Street and 122nd Avenue in the county’s Goulds neighborhood.
Steadman Stahl, with the Police Benevolent Association, said the suspect and his vehicle matched the description of a man in a vehicle who had been threatening people with a gun in the area for a couple of weeks.
“He was driving around this community, pulling out guns on innocent people out there,” Stahl said.
Deputies said a sergeant was the first to arrive at the scene and spotted Pineda sitting inside a minivan.
The sergeant ordered Pineda to show his hands, but Pineda refused, authorities said.
According to MDSO, there was an exchange of gunfire between the two and Pineda was shot.
Deputies arrived soon after as well as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
MDFR personnel transported Pineda to a local hospital, where he died.
No deputies or civilians were injured during the shootout.
According to MDSO, Pineda had an extensive criminal history.
The sergeant involved in the shooting, who is a 19-year veteran of the department, has not been identified.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, per standard protocol.
