HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — From improperly installed roofs to cracked foundations underneath, the accusations from the Seminole Tribe of Florida of poor construction work are numerous against the Miami based builder Lennar Homes.
Representing the tribe is attorney William Scherer.
“They built 465 homes on four reservations of the Seminole Tribe for the Seminole people and on Seminole land, and every single one of them has major defects that are causing health hazards, are causing construction (problems),” he said. “You’re going to have to rebuild these homes on an unprecedented scale.”
Part of the lawsuit details Seminole Park, located along State Road 7 in Hollywood, which sits on tribal land.
The tribe claims the homes, which are less than six years old, are unlivable, with the lawsuit claiming:
“Ongoing inspections have revealed units rife with significant issues, including, but not limited to issues with the ventilation and roofing systems that have resulted in moisture intrusion, and in many instances, mold.”
The lawsuit goes on to say, “Many of these leaseholder tribal members have been constructively evicted from their houses due to unsafe living conditions arising from the design and construction-related defects in their dwellings.”
Scherer flat out said that the situation is “horrendous.”
“They paid Lennar $300 million to build these houses, and they’re beautiful, and we’re going to have to reconstruct and they probably cost $300 million, who knows,” he said. “We don’t know yet what’s it going to cost to move these people out and house them while we’re rebuilding the houses, what’s it going to cost for their health issues and monitoring these people.”
Lennar Homes, plagued by previous accusations of construction quality issues, sent Local 10 their own statement, which read, in part:
“We have shared a comprehensive plan addressing the necessary repairs and enhancements, and expressed our readiness to move forward. Our goal is to ensure lasting satisfaction and confidence in the homes we build, and we are fully prepared to begin this work immediately.”
