A Hialeah woman is facing serious charges after police say she neglected her 77-year-old mother, leaving her in deplorable conditions inside their home.
Janet Edwards appeared before a judge Wednesday, charged with one count of neglect of an elderly or disabled adult and one count of battery.
According to court records, police were called to the home after Edwards’ daughter — the victim’s granddaughter — reported possible abuse. The report says the granddaughter told officers her mother had stopped caring for the elderly woman.
Investigators wrote that the victim was found locked inside a bedroom with no electricity, lying on an air mattress. Photos in the report allegedly show the woman “with fresh feces in her hands and consuming it.”
“This is abhorrent,” a state attorney said during the court hearing.
Detectives said Edwards told them her mother suffers from medical and mental health issues that cause unusual behavior and that she had seen her mother eat her own feces on several occasions. Edwards admitted feeling frustrated but denied ever striking her mother.
Judge Mindy Glazer ordered Edwards to stay at least 500 feet away from her mother and the home.
Edwards remains in custody, while her mother is under medical observation.
