Humane Society of Broward celebrates ‘Black Furrday’ with pet adoption deals

Humane Society of Broward hopes animal lovers will adopt a pet on 'Black Furrday' Black Friday isn’t just for TVs and appliances — some shoppers are heading to the Humane Society of Broward County to bring home a furry friend.

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Black Friday isn’t just for TVs and appliances — some shoppers are heading to the Humane Society of Broward County to bring home a furry friend.

Local 10 News visited the shelter Friday, where dogs and cats are available for adoption with special “Black Furrday” deals.

Adoption fees have been waived for “cuddle busters,” like Poppy, a 5-year-old dog who overcame back-leg paralysis with acupuncture and foster care. Pets over 1 year of age are available for half-price adoption.

Humane Society of Broward County seeks loving home for furry friends on "Black Furrday" Black Friday isn’t just for TVs and appliances — some shoppers are heading to the Humane Society of Broward County to bring home a furry friend.

But Poppy isn’t the only one hoping for a “furever” home this holiday weekend.

HSBC’s Cherie Wachter also introduced viewers to Casper, a gentle, snowy-white cat known around the shelter for his calm personality and slow-blinking affection. Casper came to the Humane Society after his previous owners could no longer care for him, and he’s been winning over volunteers ever since.

Wachter says he’s “a total sweetheart who loves windowsills, treats, and long naps,” and would thrive in a quiet home.

Another fan favorite this Black Furrday is Milo, an energetic young terrier mix who loves squeaky toys and belly rubs, along with Rosie, a mellow senior cat who enjoys curling up on warm laps.

Shelter staff say the variety of pets means families can find an animal whose personality fits perfectly with their lifestyle.

Wachter said the Black Furrday event runs Friday and Saturday at the shelter on 2070 Griffin Road in Fort Lauderdale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. No appointments are needed.

Wachter shared why she believes Poppy — and so many others — deserve a “furever” home.

“She’s good with other dogs, good with kids, just a home without kitty cats because she’s not a fan of cats,” Wachter said. “She loves to play with toys. She’s just a really great dog and she is one of our cuddle busters.”

Wachter later confirmed that Rosie, the first dog that was featured on Local 10’s “Adopt a Pet” segment on Friday morning has been adopted.

All pets are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before adoption, with 14 days of healthcare included from Broward County animal hospitals.

The Humane Society encouraged potential adopters to consider their lifestyle and family needs before bringing home a new pet — whether it’s Poppy, Casper, Milo, Rosie, or any of the many animals hoping Black Furrday brings them a new beginning.
