FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Humane Society of Broward County is featuring two special animals named Birdie for adoption following its Black Furrday event on Friday, which offered discounted adoption fees and helped dozens of pets find homes.

The first Birdie is a 1-year-old dog weighing 38 pounds.

HSBC’s Cherie Wachter described her as “easygoing” but a little shy, noting she may be startled by loud noises until she settles in.

“Give her time to adjust and she is going to be your best friend,” Wachter said.

Birdie, a black-and-white mix of possible spaniel, pointer, and Dalmatian, is now available for half the usual adoption fee.

The second Birdie is a 7-year-old black-and-white cat whose family is moving and cannot take her along.

Wachter said she is loving, enjoys playing with toys, and can live with small dogs or other cats, though she would also be fine as the only pet.

She is part of the shelter’s “cuddle busters” program, which waives the adoption fee for certain animals.

Wachter said the Black Furrday event on Friday was “incredible,” with more than 35 animals adopted, including Lucy, the first pet featured in the promotion.

She encouraged prospective pet owners to visit the shelter, apply online, or stop by in person. “If you’re looking for a new pet now during the holidays, this is the moment,” Wachter said.

The Broward Humane Society opens daily at 11 a.m., and more details about current adoption specials can be found on their website by clicking here.
