MIAMI — In-person early voting began on Friday in the runoff election for Miami mayor.
It is the beginning of the end of one of the most unusual and competitive Miami mayoral runoffs in the city’s history.
Both candidates, former County Commissioner Eileen Higgins and former City Manager Emilio Gonzalez, are running campaigns pledging to end drama and corruption within city government.
The two candidates ran get-out-the-vote events on Friday and the infusion of partisan politics into what is officially a nonpartisan race became evident.
Higgins appeared on the north side of Miami with several Democratic elected officials, while Gonzalez campaigned at Versailles restaurant in Little Havana with Republicans, including U.S. Sen. Rick Scott.
Both candidates, though, supported and acknowledged that it is a nonpartisan race in a nonpartisan city. Both said turnout will be critical.
“It isn’t that people dislike voting, it’s that people dislike the candidates that we had and now it’s a new day,” Gonzalez said.
Higgins said, “We can have a Miami that gets rid of the corruption, that eliminates the disruption and turns itself to focus on what you, the people, need.”
If turnout of early voting and absentee voting in the runoff is any indication, the turnout may not be all that great.
