MIAMI — After hearing about a fatal hit-and-run that occurred early Friday morning in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, a good Samaritan helped police identify the alleged driver, authorities said.
According to Miami police, the good Samaritan, who heard about the crash on the news, went to the department’s North Station Friday afternoon and said that a vehicle that matched the description of the suspect’s vehicle was parked at their apartment complex.
Police arrived at the complex a short time later and found a beige Chevrolet Tahoe that had damage consistent with striking a pedestrian.
According to an arrest report, as detectives were investigating the vehicle, Deshawn Daniels, 41, surrendered at the North Station and admitted to being the driver who struck the victim that morning.
Police said the crash occurred just before 3:30 a.m. in the area of Northwest 12th Avenue and 28th Street.
They said the victim, 62-year-old Antonio Sanchez, was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he later died.
Local 10 News obtained video of the fatal crash.
“I was looking outside, I heard the loud bang and I went outside and called 911 immediately -- turns out the dude is somebody that I know since I was 10 years old,” said witness Axel Martinez.
Daniels faces a charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a death.
As of Saturday afternoon, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Online jail records listed his bond as “to be set.”
