OAKLAND PARK, Fla. — A 41-year-old man was arrested this past Sunday in connection with the fatal shooting of his girlfriend earlier this year in Oakland Park, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
An arrest report obtained Wednesday by Local 10 News identified the suspect as Miguel Hernandez, who faces one count of manslaughter with a firearm and multiple drug possession charges.
The shooting happened on Jan. 24 near the 4000 block of Northeast Eighth Avenue. Deputies and Oakland Park Fire Rescue responded to reports of a shooting and found the victim in the yard outside a small efficiency unit.
According to investigators, video recorded just before 2 p.m. shows Hernandez and the victim engaged in a verbal argument. Authorities said the video shows Hernandez leaving and then re-entering the room, racking the slide on a handgun and handing it to the victim while urging her to harm herself.
At approximately 2 p.m., investigators said the victim pulled the trigger, shooting herself in the right side of the head.
The video shows projectile fragments exiting the top of her head and striking a mirror on a nearby dresser, according to authorities.
Immediately after the gunshot, Hernandez can be heard screaming, “Oh my God, baby, oh my God,” and directing his mother to call 911, investigators said.
According to investigators, the woman was lying near the doorway with her head on a ledge and her body extending into the yard. A large pool of blood surrounded her head, and she was still breathing when deputies arrived.
Deputies said Hernandez, the victim’s boyfriend, was nearby, crying and with blood on his hands, saying, “Help her, help her.”
They said Hernandez’s mother, who lives nearby, called 911 after hearing what she believed were gunshots coming from the efficiency where the couple lived.
Detectives said the victim was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where she later died. A death investigation was then launched.
During a search of the efficiency, deputies said they found a black pouch containing two small glass pipes commonly used to smoke illicit drugs.
Investigators said they also recovered a gun resting on top of a laundry basket filled with clothes just inside the unit, with the barrel facing the doorway.
Detectives said the gun was impounded, and they obtained consent to search Hernandez’s cellphone, though the report does not detail what, if anything, was found.
Jail records show Hernandez was being held without bond at the Broward County Main Jail, as of Tuesday.
Editor’s note: An updated arrest report from BSO states that the victim’s gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
