MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 15-year-old boy was shot in the foot during a confrontation with deputies in a Goulds neighborhood, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
Asia Spann, who says she is the boy’s aunt, spoke out after a large police presence drew her to the scene.
“They shot my nephew in the foot. I don’t know why this happened, what happened, but all I want is answers,” Spann said.
The sheriff’s office says around 3:30 p.m., deputies received a call about someone with a gun at a park near Southwest 216th Street and Southwest 113th Avenue.
A be-on-the-lookout notice was sent out. The assistant sheriff says deputies approached four people matching the description. There was a confrontation, and a deputy shot the 15-year-old boy in the foot.
“We’re just grateful that nobody else got hurt and he’s in stable condition,” said Assistant Sheriff Fernand Charles.
Deputies say they found a gun near the teen.
“We need to make sure we’re mindful of what our children are doing day in and day out. 3:30 in the afternoon, a 15-year-old is walking around with a firearm is not acceptable by any means,” Charles said.
After being told what deputies said about her nephew, Spann responded:
“I just got an update my nephew is doing well. I don’t know about no firearms or whatever. He didn’t shoot no firearms, shoot at the police, you know, to my understanding, but why did they just jump out and unknown cause, they just start shooting? That’s what I wanna know,” she said.
Deputies say all the juveniles involved were taken into custody. The 15-year-old was transported to the hospital.
When asked if he will be arrested like the other juveniles, the sheriff’s office said that will be up to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which will take the lead on the investigation.
