FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Spirit Airlines ticket counters at the airport are sitting empty -- something travelers say they’ve never seen before.
As passengers deal with canceled flights, several other airlines are stepping in with discounted options.
JetBlue is offering $99 one-way fares for travelers who can show proof of a canceled Spirit flight. The deal runs through Wednesday.
Frontier Airlines says it’s helping Spirit customers with up to 50% off base fares. Travelers can use the code “SAVENOW” -- all one word -- to get the discount.
American Airlines says it has added “rescue fares” on routes typically served by Spirit, though it has not released specific pricing.
The airline also says it’s working to provide transportation for Spirit employees who may be stranded during work trips.
United Airlines has launched a special webpage with options for affected travelers.
Southwest Airlines is also offering discounted flights to customers who can show proof of a canceled Spirit flight, with that offer running through Wednesday.
One traveler, Angela Moreno, said she’s been stuck trying to rebook -- not with Spirit.
“We tried calling, no one in customer service. And since we figured it out today, we tried to reach out and we were like, what do we have to lose,” she said.
Passengers continue showing up at the airport looking for answers. Several people have asked workers what’s going on, only to be told that Spirit plans to issue refunds for canceled flights -- and that there’s no need to come to the airport unless they plan to fly with another airline.
