HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — New details were released Friday after a driver allegedly fled from Hollywood police Thursday night, causing a car crash on Hallandale Beach Boulevard.
Hollywood police spokeswoman Deanna Bettineschi identified the driver as 30-year-old Tyrell Anton Thomas, who was wanted in connection with a shooting.
Bettineschi said Thomas was involved in an argument with a couple of victims on the beach at Douglas Street at about 7 p.m. Thursday.
She said he then grabbed a gun from his vehicle, returned to the beach and fired at two people.
He then returned to his car and threatened a third victim, Bettineschi said.
The victims were not injured in the shooting.
Bettineschi said Thomas fled from officers who spotted his vehicle, but he refused to stop.
“All of a sudden, I saw the cop cars on the horizon, chasing (him). Then I saw who they were chasing, this black car,” witness Chris Coletti said.
Witnesses said the driver then tried turning onto Hallandale Beach Boulevard while going the wrong direction.
“He made the turn going probably over 50 miles an hour, and the car didn’t turn,” Coletti said. “It jumped over the median and hit those cars.”
Bettineschi confirmed that Thomas crashed his car at South Ocean Drive and Hallandale Beach Boulevard and was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.
He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, aggravated assault with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, wearing a mask or face covering in the commission of a felony, fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a crash and resisting arrest.
As of Friday morning, he was being held at the Broward County Main Jail without bond.
