CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — A month after surviving a shooting in Coral Springs, Mirtha Sanchez-Teran said she is staying positive as she continues her recovery and hopes to help others facing domestic violence.
Sanchez-Teran and Local 10 News met at a park where Sanchez-Teran provided an update on how she is doing following the April shooting.
She showed the gunshot wounds she suffered to her shoulders, back and chin.
Sanchez-Teran said she currently cannot bend her fingers or make a fist with her left hand.
Her life changed last month when she was shot multiple times behind a plaza along West Sample Road in Coral Springs.
Police said her ex-boyfriend, Abdul Perez, carried out the shooting.
Bystanders captured the incident on video.
Detectives said Perez rammed his work van into Sanchez-Teran’s car, got out and fired multiple shots while her daughter was inside the vehicle.
Her daughter was not hurt.
Sanchez-Teran said she ended the couple’s two-year relationship on April 1 because of abuse and never imagined the shooting would happen just 17 days later.
Now, she hopes her experience can one day help someone else.
“Sometimes you don’t have time to wait. Every second counts. And you don’t know what that other person is going to do and when,” Sanchez-Teran said. “So that’s what my hope is for all this, that I can have those resources for someone else. That’s really what I want to do in this life.”
Asked if she believes that is why she was given a second chance, Sanchez-Teran responded: “Yes, most definitely that is why I’m here and why I’m able to speak to you today from the heart.”
She said she does not have insurance because she has not been able to find a job.
She also lost her car and continues to face medical expenses.
