MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — A man who was arrested earlier this year for allegedly sexually battering a Florida Memorial University student on campus is now facing another criminal charge after he contacted the victim from jail, authorities said.
According to an arrest report obtained Wednesday by Local 10 News, Steven Devon Mason Rivers, 31, of Miami, repeatedly called the victim from the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center between May 24 and June 13.
Police said the victim answered one of the calls and recorded the conversation.
According to the report, the victim asked, “Hello, who is this?” and Rivers told her, “We need to talk. Why aren’t you answering the phone? You see I’ve been calling you. This is Steven.”
Police said the victim then hung up the phone.
According to the report, the victim first notified a Miami Gardens Police Department victims advocate on May 24 after Rivers called her for the first time.
Police said the victim, who is an international student from Colombia, said she is in fear for her life and believes Rivers might soon be released from jail.
She said hearing his voice is now “giving her flashbacks” of being attacked by him.
According to authorities, the alleged sexual battery happened just after 7 a.m. on Jan. 25 at FMU’s campus at 15800 NW 42nd Ave. in Miami Gardens.
Police said the student was waiting at a bus stop when Rivers, who is homeless, whispered at her and followed her back onto campus.
They said Rivers entered the campus by jumping a fence and asked the victim to use her cellphone. When she refused, he pinned her against a door and sexually battered her, authorities said.
As of Wednesday, Rivers remained held at TGK on a $513,001 bond on charges of sexual battery, robbery by sudden snatching, attempted sexual battery, battery on a police officer/firefighter/corrections officer, resisting an officer without violence and harassing a victim of a crime.
