MIAMI — The sounds of a marching band, parade cheers and colorful floats filled Key Biscayne on Saturday as families gathered along Crandon Boulevard for the annual Fourth of July parade.
“It’s been pretty good. She’s enjoying it a lot. She got a toy and wet,” one attendee said.
Others said they were happy to celebrate with the community.
“I just like being out seeing the community celebrating the nation. I think it’s a great time to be out,” another person said.
Across South Florida, people turned out for local events celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary.
“Happy birthday America,” one person shouted.
“Just be happy to be free, you know what I mean. Be free in America. It’s a great feeling,” said Cliff Sebastian.
“It sounds easy, but you know in all this celebration we’re also keeping the memory of those who actually made this happen all the way back 250 years ago,” said Yamilet Diaz.
Diaz went all out for the Fourth of July, wearing a bedazzled hat, patriotic shirt and pants.
“I was born in Cuba where I had no freedom growing up. When I was able to escape at the age of 15, I felt like I was born again. For me, I don’t take anything for granted, not one second of the life we’re able to live here,” Diaz said.
At Tropical Park, Miami-Dade County hosted its own Fourth of July celebration.
Thousands were expected to pack the park for activities, food trucks, entertainment and, of course, fireworks.
“It’s wonderful. It’s a blessing,” said Elaine Simpson of Miami.
For many, the holiday was about celebrating freedom and spending time with loved ones.
“Being with family, friends, meeting people.”
As the celebrations continued across South Florida, the chants echoed through the crowds:
“Happy Fourth of July.”
