MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 36-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges after Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies said he allegedly stalked one woman for days before breaking into her home and watching her as she slept, while also targeting another victim in the same neighborhood.
Jail records show Kevin Perez was arrested Thursday by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
According to arrest reports, the two separate cases involved different victims and occurred in the county’s Kendale Lakes neighborhood.
In the first case, deputies said they responded just before midnight Monday to a home in the 12700 block of Southwest 68th Terrace after receiving a report of a burglary in progress.
The victim told deputies she was asleep in her bedroom when she woke up and saw an “unknown male figure” standing in her doorway, according to the report.
The report states she screamed “hello” twice, causing the man to turn around and walk away.
Deputies said the woman then discovered the home’s laundry room sliding glass door was open.
According to the report, the victim locked herself in her bedroom and called 911. While on the phone, she heard a loud noise coming from the kitchen as the intruder fled, investigators said.
Deputies said they determined the suspect had forced entry by prying open the laundry room sliding glass door with an unknown tool, causing about $500 in damage.
Investigators said they collected DNA and fingerprint evidence from the scene. The report states that MDSO’s crime lab notified investigators Thursday of a DNA match identifying Perez.
Deputies said they later arrested Perez, who also lives in the Kendale Lakes area, later that day on an unrelated Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office case. According to the report, after waiving his Miranda rights, Perez gave “verbal and written statements implicating himself in the burglary.”
Deputies said in a separate case involving a different victim, Perez faces one count of aggravated stalking.
According to that arrest report, the investigation began after deputies reviewed surveillance video from July 12 showing Perez approaching the victim in a parking lot in the 6700 block of Southwest 132nd Avenue before engaging her in conversation.
The report states that later that evening, security cameras captured Perez loitering behind the victim’s apartment, looking through the rear sliding glass door and then sitting on the grass while continuing to watch the home.
The following night, the victim’s neighbor’s Ring camera allegedly recorded Perez attempting to open the victim’s front door before deputies responded to the nearby burglary investigation, authorities said.
According to the report, Perez was taken to the MDSO’s Hammocks District Station on Thursday, where, after waiving his Miranda rights, he provided verbal and written statements implicating himself in the stalking investigation.
Investigators concluded that Perez “willfully, maliciously, and repeatedly stalked” the victim before eventually forcing his way into her home to watch her while she slept, according to his arrest report.
Jail records show Perez is facing burglary, voyeurism and criminal mischief charges in the first case, along with one count of aggravated stalking in the second case.
As of Friday afternoon, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was listed as “to be set.”
