MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A third arrest has been made in connection with a series of alleged illegal street takeovers across Miami-Dade County, including a hit-and-run that seriously injured three pedestrians last month, authorities confirmed in an arrest report obtained by Local 10 News on Tuesday.
Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said they arrested 20-year-old Anthony Brandon Lamelas on Monday in connection with a July 5 “illegal street takeover" that occurred in Miami-Dade’s Gladview neighborhood.
Jail records show he is facing two counts of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury.
Authorities said the street takeover occurred around 3:30 a.m. July 5 near Northwest 25th Street and Northwest 76th Avenue.
According to an arrest report, MDSO deputies and Doral police officers responded to reports of dozens of vehicles blocking the intersection while drivers performed “dangerous driving maneuvers, including drifting, donuts, and burnouts,” as fireworks were discharged in multiple directions.
The report states that as law enforcement arrived, the crowd scattered and multiple vehicles fled at high speed. During the chaos, three pedestrians were struck by fleeing vehicles, deputies said.
According to the arrest report, two women were crossing the roadway when they were struck by a black sedan traveling westbound on Northwest 25th Street.
Deputies said surveillance video showed one woman reaching safety after the collision, while the other was thrown into the roadway and remained motionless. The report states the driver maneuvered around the injured woman and fled without stopping.
Authorities said a man then ran into the roadway to help the injured woman but was struck by a gold Ford Expedition. According to the arrest report, the SUV continued westbound, ran over the woman as she remained in the roadway and left the scene without stopping.
According to the report, one victim suffered multiple skull fractures, a cervical spine fracture, a fractured pelvis and a fractured right femur. Deputies said another sustained a fractured clavicle, while the third suffered a fractured hip along with cuts, bruises and road rash.
Investigators said they identified the gold Ford Expedition through witness interviews, surveillance footage, license plate reader analysis and a court-authorized cellphone data warrant. They said the vehicle was registered to Lamelas, and detectives said cellphone data placed his device in the area during the relevant time period.
The report states that a deputy who encountered the SUV as it fled the scene was able to provide a description of the driver after the driver allegedly lowered his window, made obscene gestures and yelled derogatory remarks at law enforcement. The deputy later identified Lamelas in a photographic lineup, according to the report.
Deputies said they arrested Lamelas at his home on Monday.
According to the report, he was advised of his Miranda rights, invoked his right to remain silent and was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
Deputies said Lamelas is the third person arrested as part of MDSO’s investigation into alleged illegal street takeovers across Miami-Dade County.
Last month, authorities arrested 22-year-old Damiean Alvarez, who is also accused of participating in multiple street takeovers on July 5.
Deputies said they identified Damiean Alvarez as a passenger inside a blue Infiniti G35 that was doing donuts at the intersection of Northwest 77th Court and 169th Street around 1:20 a.m., where approximately 50 to 60 vehicles were present and blocking the intersection.
About two hours later, deputies said they saw Alvarez again in the same vehicle performing donuts at the intersection of Northwest 25th Street and 76th Avenue, underneath the Palmetto Expressway, with another group of approximately 50 to 60 vehicles blocking the intersection.
Deputies said Inaky Sesmas-Borrego, 22, was also arrested in connection with the alleged street takeover investigation. Records show he is facing a charge of coordinated drag racing on a highway.
As of Tuesday morning, Lamelas remained at TGK, where his bond was listed as “to be set.” Alvarez and Sesmas-Borrego were no longer listed as inmates in Miami-Dade County jail records.
