LIGHTHOUSE POINT, Fla. — A homeowner shot and killed one of two dogs that attacked his small dog outside his Lighthouse Point home Thursday morning, and the second dog later attacked another resident before fleeing, police confirmed.
Lighthouse Point police said officers responded around 10:13 a.m. to a home near the 2600 block of Northeast 52nd Street following reports of an “animal bite.”
Police said the attack occurred after two dogs escaped from a fenced yard and began roaming the neighborhood. They said the dogs encountered a smaller dog on the front porch of a nearby home, where one of the loose dogs attacked it.
They said the small dog’s owner and neighbors tried to separate the animals but were unable to do so. The owner then retrieved a gun and fatally shot the attacking dog in an effort to stop the attack.
Police said the second loose dog fled and later encountered another resident nearby, biting the person in the leg and causing a puncture wound before leaving the area. The dog later returned to its residence, where it was secured by its caretaker.
Lighthouse Point Fire Rescue medics evaluated the wounded resident at the scene. The resident later chose to seek additional medical treatment independently, police said.
They said the small dog suffered serious injuries and was taken by its owner to a local veterinary hospital for treatment.
Neighbors told Local 10 News they heard screams and rushed outside to find the larger dog attacking the smaller dog’s neck. Residents also described the neighborhood as a popular area for families and dog walkers.
Police said Broward County staff members also responded to the scene and investigated the incident.
They are now working to determine where the two attacking dogs came from and the circumstances that led to the attack.
They said no charges had been filed as of Thursday. The investigation remains ongoing.
