PALM COAST, Fla. — A now-former Miami-Dade College professor has been arrested for allegedly traveling to meet a minor.

According to authorities, 46-year-old Richard Tapia was arrested in Flagler County on July 22 after deputies said he drove an underage girl from Jacksonville to the at the Microtel Inn & Suites located at 16 Kingswood Drive in Palm Coast.

Detectives said they believe Tapia met the victim on an app.

Authorities were alerted to the girl’s location after family members pinged her cell phone and alerted detectives.

Tapia has since been charged with interference with custody of a minor, a felony offense.

The arrest report also notes authorities took his cell phone and clothing for a pending sex offense investigation.

Local 10 News reached out to Miami-Dade College, which provided the following statement:

Miami Dade College has zero tolerance for conduct that endangers children, threatens the safety of others, or violates the trust, integrity, and professional standards expected of every member of our College community.

While the Miami Herald report identifies the individual as an employee of Miami Dade College, the individual is no longer employed by the College. Several weeks ago, immediately upon learning of this matter, Miami Dade College took swift and decisive action and terminated the individual’s employment.

The allegations are deeply disturbing and wholly inconsistent with the values and standards of our institution. The safety and well-being of our students, employees, and visitors are paramount.

Miami Dade College remains unwavering in our commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, and secure environment. We have zero tolerance for conduct of this nature and will continue to act immediately and decisively when conduct violates the standards and trust of our College community.
