MIAMI — A 22-year-old man was arrested Thursday after police said he struck a pedestrian with a vehicle before getting out and battering him.
Miami police said officers responded to a report of a driver striking a pedestrian and then crashing into a wall.
An arrest report states that officers found a vehicle crashed into the side of a building at 4111 Southwest Fourth St. They said tire marks indicated the vehicle traveled over the sidewalk, through the grass, struck a small tree and then collided with the building.
Witnesses told police that the driver drove into the grass toward the building, exited the vehicle and struck the victim, who was on the ground, with multiple punches to the face, according to the report.
The report states that at least one witness told police the driver intentionally drove into the victim before the crashed into the wall.
Other witnesses said the victim then ran south in an attempt to flee, and the driver chased him toward apartment buildings, according to the report.
Officers later located both men near the 400 block of Southwest 42nd Avenue.
Police said the suspect, Ramon Antonio Osorio, matched the descriptions provided by witnesses.
They also confirmed that the victim was bleeding heavily from the mouth, had bruising to both elbows, and possible internal head and body injuries.
Miami Fire Rescue medics transported him to Coral Gables Hospital for treatment, according to the report.
After being read his Miranda rights, Osorio told officers that the victim was his friend and that they had been asleep in his vehicle, according to police.
Osorio said after waking up in his vehicle, he discovered that the victim and money from his crossbody bag were gone, according to the report.
Osorio, who is listed as homeless in his arrest report, told police he later found the victim counting a large amount of money on a sidewalk and became upset. He also admitted to repeatedly punching the victim in the face, the report states.
When asked whether he struck the victim with the vehicle or how the vehicle crashed into the building, Osorio invoked his rights and declined to answer further questions, according to police.
Police said a witness identified Osorio during a live show-up. They said at least one witness provided video footage that showed Osorio striking the victim while he was on the ground.
Osorio was taken into custody and transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital for medical clearance before being taken to jail.
Jail records show Osorio is facing one count of aggravated battery.
As of Friday, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. His bond was listed as “to be set.”
