Alston has previously served as a Broward County commissioner and School Board member; in both cases, he was appointed to those offices by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
He has also previously led the Greater Miami Expressway Agency and was on the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Board of Trustees.
