HOMESTEAD, Fla. — A Florida City man accused of gunning down another man outside a Homestead market last month was arrested Wednesday, according to investigators.
Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, who is the leading agency on the case, said Kentreal Sharmaine Smith, 37, was taken into custody and charged in connection with the Aug. 18 fatal shooting that occurred outside of Valentine’s Market, located at 636 SW Sixth Ave.
They said officers from the Homestead Police Department responded just after midnight to the market after a ShotSpotter alert detected 11 rounds being fired.
Authorities said they found the victim on the sidewalk suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. They said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue medics pronounced him dead at 12:16 a.m.
They said 11 shell casings from a 9 mm firearm were recovered at the scene, according to the report.
Smith’s arrest report states that surveillance video and a witness placed him across the street from the market moments before the shooting, watching as the victim sat on the sidewalk at the west end of the building.
Deputies said Smith at some point climbed onto an electric bike and rode around the area of the market before approaching the victim from behind the building and opening fire.
They said Smith then fled westbound to a route that was consistent with his girlfriend’s Florida City home.
An autopsy conducted Aug. 18 by Miami-Dade County Associate Medical Examiner determined the victim died of multiple gunshot wounds, with the manner of death classified as a homicide, the report states.
Authorities located Smith at his home near the 800 block of Fifth Court in Florida City and arrested him, the report states.
Inside the home, officers found an electric bike with a 9 mm gun tucked in its pouch in the living room, according to the report.
Smith was transported to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau, where he “confessed his involvement in the homicide,” the report states.
Authorities have not released any information on the victim’s age or identity, and a motive for the shooting remains unclear at this time.
Jail records show Smith is facing one count of second-degree murder with a weapon.
As of Thursday, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was listed as “to be set.” Records show he is also facing multiple drug-related charges that include possession of cocaine and illegal possession of a firearm as a convicted felon in an unrelated case.
