POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — A sex offender who authorities said was arrested three times for lewd behavior on the New York City subway now faces disturbing allegations in South Florida.
A 36-year-old man booked under the name Jose Kamruzzaman was taken into custody on Thursday in connection with the Feb. 27 incident at the Islamic Center of South Florida, a mosque at 1641 NW 15th St. in Pompano Beach.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, security guards at the mosque called deputies after seeing a man later, identified as Kamruzzaman, of Boca Raton, engaging in “odd” behavior with a group of girls who were walking outside ― namely, Kamruzzaman picking one of them up.
A report states that the girls told one guard they didn’t know Kamruzzaman, whom the guards also confronted, trying to get his identification. Deputies said he instead took off in his car, but the guards were able to snap a photo of his license plate.
According to BSO, video showed Kamruzzaman beckoning one of the girls over and lifting her up. Deputies said he inappropriately touched two girls during the encounter. Their ages weren’t specified, but at least one was under 12, authorities said.
Authorities said they were able to trace the vehicle to Kamruzzaman, who had it registered under No Name Given Kamruzzaman. Deputies said in the report that Kamruzzaman only had one name, so it’s unclear whether “Jose” is a legal name, a nickname or a placeholder.
The New York Police Department has referred to Kamruzzaman as “Fnu Kamruzzaman” - “Fnu” standing for “first name unknown.”
“We don’t even know his first name,” a Broward prosecutor said in court Friday.
According to BSO, Kamruzzaman has had at least three run-ins with the NYPD for lewd subway behavior.
In 2014, they said he was arrested for “rubbing himself against a 15-year-old girl on a train.”
In August 2017, police said he rubbed himself against an off-duty female police officer on a Manhattan-bound 7 train in Queens, then “exposed himself,” then got off at a stop and fled before being captured in the Sunnyside neighborhood.
Then, in 2021, he was accused of “masturbating in front of a woman” on an E train.
Kamruzzaman, now facing Broward charges of lewd and lascivious conduct and lewd and lascivious molestation, was ordered held without bond.
He’s also behind bars on an immigration hold. His nationality wasn’t clear; arrest documents list his place of birth as Queens, which a prosecutor said in court was “clearly not accurate,” given that he has a final deportation order.
