MDX keeps 70-cent toll hike

Non-Sunpass users to see increase on Dolphin Expressway

Headline Goes Here

MIAMI - The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority on Tuesday voted to keep a measure that would increase tolls on the Dolphin Expressway for non-Sunpass users.

The increase will remain at 70 cents.

"We need to continue providing improvements to mostly [S.R.] 836," said MDX spokeswoman Terri Garcia. "For example, this money is committed specifically to certain projects, including improving the most-congested piece of 836, which is from [Northwest] 57th [Avenue] to I-95."

"It's no longer just the public -- it's the state and local representatives, elected officials, that are saying this is an outrageous increase, an outrageous burden for the commuter of South Florida to bear and it has to be looked at," Carlos Garcia with said before the vote. "MDX can get the money from other areas of their budgets for a lot of these road-improvement projects that they want to do."

The changes will begin in the summer of 2014.
