Dallas police chief receives death threats after fatal shooting of 5 officers

Chief David Brown says it wasn't an 'ethical dilemma' to kill gunman

DALLAS – Parts of downtown Dallas remain a crime scene after the fatal shooting of five police officers.

Evidence markers and FBI agents litter the streets, and the Dallas police chief says there is still a lot that needs to be done.

"There's over 170 hours of bodycam video to download, and that is ongoing," Chief David Brown said. "Detectives are also collecting all dashcam video."

Despite all the love and support officers have seen the last few days, police remain vigilant, prompting a few lockdowns and security scares.

"Me and my family have received death threats almost immediately after the shooting," Brown said. "There is a heightened sense of awareness around threats received all over the country."

Brown said threats were made not only to toward him, but also toward the department and law enforcement officers.

Meanwhile, the public is learning more about Micah Johnson, 25, and how police said they took him down after he killed five officers and wounded nine others during a Black Lives Matter protest.

As he was holed up in a Dallas parking garage, police sent in a small robot with an explosive to end the hours-long standoff.

The decision to use explosives to kill Johnson has raised some controversy.

"He was asking us how many did he get. He was telling us how many more he wanted to kill," Brown said. "This wasn't an ethical dilemma for me. I'd do it again. I would do it again to save our officers' lives."

Stories of horror, heartbreak, survival and heroism followed  Thursday night's ambush.

Shetamia Taylor, who was shot while shielding her son, said police surrounded her and saved her life by creating a human wall of bodies to block the bullets.

"They stayed there with us, and I saw another officer, I saw another officer get shot right in front of me," she said through tears from a Dallas hospital. "I'm so sorry that they lost their lives, but I'm thankful. I'm so thankful. I had never seen anything like that the way they just came around us and guarded us like that."
