MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Oliver G. Gilbert III, the winner of the Democratic primary, and Te Brown, the uncontested Republican candidate, will face off in the midterm election for Florida’s 24th Congressional District.
U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, a Democrat who represented the district for about 13 years and is known for her colorful hats, announced in May that she was not seeking re-election.
Wilson, 83, endorsed Gilbert, 53, a Miami-Dade commissioner and former commission chair who served as mayor of Miami Gardens from 2012 to 2020.
With all precincts reported after the primary, 34% of Democratic voters cast their ballots for Gilbert, who grew up in Miami Gardens and earned a JD from the University of Miami.
According to the U.S. Federal Election Commission’s reports on campaign contributions, Gilbert’s total receipts were more than $812,140, his total disbursements were more than $583,000, and his cash on hand was over $229,090.
About 32% also cast their ballots for Florida Sen. Shevrin “Shev” Jones, who served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2012 to 2020.
According to the U.S. FEC’s reports on campaign contributions, Jones’s total receipts were more than $283,690, his total disbursements were more than $205,080, and his cash on hand was over $78,610.
Gilbert and Jones, 42, ran in a crowded race with five other candidates: Kendrick Meek Jr., Dr. Rudolph “Rudy” Moise, Jean Monestime, Roderick “Rod” Vereen, and Marshal L. Davis, Sr.
Gilbert will be running against Brown, a businesswoman born in Chicago, on Nov. 3rd. Early voting is from Oct. 24th to 31st. The deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot is Oct. 22nd, and the deadline to register to vote is Oct. 5th.
